What are "Principalities, Powers, World Rulers of Darkness, and Spiritual Wickedness in High Places"?
The Apostle Paul instructs us to put on our spiritual armour because our battle in this world is a "spiritual" one. A warfare that involves the trickery and power of the devil, as opposed to a human battle. Even though human beings will certainly play a role in line with the schemes of the devil, but they are being used by these entities for the purposes of accomplishing evil. Evil spirits are the true power behind those who oppose the things of God (knowingly or unknowingly). We read,
Eph 6:12: For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Our Spiritual Warfare is Against "Principalities"
The concept of principalities is understood by the Greek word arche meaning chief or ruler. These principalities are ruling devil spirits possessing executive authority or governmental rule in the world. As we will see, this ruling power usually involves a particular nation, people or race. There are evil angels ruling the kingdoms of the world that oppose the truth of God, and of which Satan is the chief prince or ruler, of both the world system and its organization of demons, as noted in the gospel of Matthew.
In Matthew 12:24, the devil is called "Beelzebub" meaning lord of the dwelling, in which these wicked spirits are subject to and operate under Satan's dominion. They, like their chief prince, direct, control, rule and carry out the present darkness of this world.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines principalities as:
1. A territory ruled by a prince or from which a prince derives his title.
2. The position, authority, or jurisdiction of a prince; sovereignty.
The idea of prince devil spirits ruling or controlling a region is supported in the Old Testament book of Daniel, chapter 10. Daniel is visited by an angel in response to his prayer to God. This angel, who was sent by God to answer Daniel's prayer, was delayed for 21 days because of a battle that took place between God's angel and "a prince of the kingdom of Persia."Daniel reveals the angel's message in the following verses:
Dan 10:12-13
"Then said he [the angel] unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten [humble] thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia."
The spiritual battle, for this angel, was of such magnitude that Michael, the archangel of God and designated prince of Israel, assisted the angel in battle. Another enemy of God, the prince of Greece, is also mentioned in the verses below.
Dan 10:20-21
"Then said he [the angel], Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince."
The book of Daniel gives us an excellent example of how these unseen spiritual entities fight to increase and maintain their realms of influence and control in order to hinder God's purposes. In addition, as previously stated, these princes are named after the nations or rather their principalities in which they rule.
It is Satan's purpose to deceive these nations and to keep them from obtaining a knowledge of God's truth and salvation through His Son Jesus Christ. In the book of Revelation, chapter 20, Satan is depicted as a deceiver of nations. The Greek word for deceive is planaho, and according to Strong's Greek Dictionary, this word means to "cause to roam from safety, truth or virtue, go astray, seduce, wander, and to be out of the way."
Satan's major success, in deceiving a nation, is due to a lack of discernment on the part of the people. The people are blind to the invisible forces of supernatural evil that are operating and influencing their visible human agents of political, social, religious and philosophical programs. Satan's greatest victory would be to convince the world that he just doesn't exist. However, God signifies the devil as the author of sin, sickness and death, and warns us to be alert and vigilant because the devil, as a roaring lion roams about seeking whom he may devour (1 Pet. 5:8).
The devil controls the kingdoms of the world and we are not to underestimate his influence and power, nor believe that this is the will of God. God is telling us to "stand" against these evil forces by equipping ourselves with the power of God, and looking unto Christ as our example.
Luke 4:5-7: And the devil, taking him (Jesus) up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered (to surrender or yield up) unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
These are "kingdoms" - From G935; properly royalty, that is, (abstractly) rule, or (concretely) a realm(literally or figuratively): - kingdom, + reign.
There will also come a day in which we are told in the book of Revelation,
Rev 11:15: And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
However, until this Scripture is fulfilled we can only conclude, as the Apostle Paul instructs, that our wrestling involves principalities or peoples or regions under the influence and deception of Satan. Satan is the prince or ruler of the kingdoms of this world, also described in the Bible as the "kingdom of darkness," in which we have our spiritual warfare. In addition, let us not be fooled, because Satan can and does prosper evil people in the world.
Our Spiritual Warfare is Against "Powers and World Rulers of Darkness"
The Greek word for "powers" is exousia which means derived or conferred authority, the warrant or right to do something, or delegated influences of control. Although the word "powers" is left unclear as to Paul's precise meaning in the verse, this expression is used elsewhere in scripture to infer the powers that be in authority. In keeping with the context of this verse, this would include all high-ranking, evil supernatural powers and the power of sin and evil in operation in the world. The fruits of this type of evil can probably be seen in drug cartels, gross poverty, plagues, terrorism, and other heinous crimes against humanity, even toward the animal kingdom.
Some Christian authors also associate "world rulers" with magic and demonic pagan gods such as the Ephesians' Artemis and seems to be in line with the pagan culture of ancient times, in which temples were dedicated to these demonic pagan deities. And let us not forget "Molech," the national god of the Ammonites' in Old Testament history. The priests would place the sacrificial children into the brass hands of the image, in which these helpless victims would slip into the fire below. This is described in Scripture as the "abominations of the nations" (2 kings 16:3 ASV).
Our Spiritual Warfare is Against "Spiritual Wickedness in Heavenly Places"
The Greek word for wickedness is ponēria and means depravity and particularly in the sense of malice and mischief, plots, sins, and iniquity (Strong's Gk. Dict.).
Malice [A. H. Dict.] is defined as:
1. A desire to harm others or to see others suffer; extreme ill will or spite.
2. Law -- The intent, without just cause or reason, to commit a wrongful act that will result in harm to another.
Satan is also depicted as the prince of the power of the air
Since Satan is the prince of the power of the air, these wicked spirits, in high places, are often understood to be the collective organization of all of Satan's devil spirits. These malevolent spirits work evil and mischief and operate in our atmosphere. They operate as close to the very air we breathe, and reach to realms beyond. All kinds of spiritual filth are propagated , in these realms, for the purpose of humanity's deception and subsequent destruction. Prior to becoming a Christian we too walked according to the prince of the power of the air.
Eph 2:2-3
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (This verse will be treated in a separate post)
As Christians we are delivered from the power of the prince of the air, and from the sinful nature that once ruled our path in life. When we received God's Holy Spirit, at the moment of our conversion to Christ, we were translated from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God's light, in which we now have God in Christ in us. We are continually delivered and empowered by God as we walk according to His Word and Spirit that He has given us. As we do this, we take our seat in the heavenlies with Christ, for scripture reads,
Eph 2:5-7
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Jesus is also called a Prince, He is called the Prince of Peace and of Life (Isa. 9:6 and Acts 3:15) Whose kingdom plays no part in this present world system of darkness. Prior to His arrest, Jesus said to His disciples,
Joh 14:30
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
Joh 18:36
"Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence."
Please note: Jesus is not speaking against the Jews, for Jesus and His followers were Jewish. He is speaking against the hypocritical religious authorities who would have Jesus killed versus lose their sphere of control over the people of God, in which their own belly was their god.
The details of God's plan, His provision of escape from Satan's kingdom of darkness through faith in Christ, was kept a mystery from the beginning of time. It wasn't until the revelation of the Son of God on earth, and His complete victory in His death and resurrection for the salvation of humanity, that the mystery of salvation through Christ is revealed to us. The Apostle Paul states,
1Co 2:7-10: "But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory. Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God."
In other words, if God's enemies knew that the Lord's death would bring the Kingdom of God and His power into the hearts of every believer, with His gift of Holy Spirit, and thus bring God's light into the world, they would not have crucified Him.
Who is your prince?
For the Christian, Jesus Christ is our Prince of Peace and Life, and we will reign with Him forevermore.
The Mystery Revealed
The Mystery Revealed - Col. 1: 26-27
The mystery revealed is stated in Scripture as, "...Christ in you, the hope of glory." Jesus Christ, Who came as a light in the world, a light that the kingdom of darkness tried to extinguish. But through the sacrifice of Christ, the Son of God, God's gift of Holy Spirit is given to every believer in Christ (Christ in you), in which, through the manifold wisdom of God, one Lord and Light, continues to sow a vast Kingdom of Light.
1Co 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Before going on to explore the tactics of our warfare we must become familiar with what the Bible reveals about satan’s kingdom. Here is a brief summary including scripture references to further your study.
Begin by mediating on these two important passages:
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of His love (Col.1:13) ….... having wiped out the handwriting of the requirements against us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
He disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it (Col.2:14-15)
Isaiah 14:12-15 refers to the devil. He is called the "shining one" in that passage. From the Latin translation of the title we get the name Lucifer.
God divided responsibility among several high-ranking angels. One of these angels was named Lucifer. He may have been an archangel. In my personal opinion he was, even though Michael is the only one specifically called an archangel in the Bible (Jude 1:9).
Through rebellion, Lucifer fell from heaven taking one third of the angels with him; every free mortal creature in the universe must at one time make a final decision whether to give allegiance to God or to self. Lucifer chose self (Rev.12:7-9).
Lucifer became the adversary – the opposer, which is the meaning of his name 'satan'. He is the opposer and enemy of both God and man. Satan is filled with vindictive rage against God’s children, especially the redeemed children, who will rule with Christ in glory.
Satan and his fallen angels were defeated at the cross and will finally be condemned (Col.2:15; Matt 25:41).
Demons are the force operating behind false religions, idolatry, magic and witchcraft (Deut.32:17; Ps96:5; 1Cor.10:19-20; Rev.9:20-21).
Satan and his demons are in a state of continual war against the church and God’s people individually. All believers are exhorted to combat all levels of evil spiritual forces in the unseen realm (Eph 6:10-15), till we have the victory and breakthrough in the level God has allowed us to battle in for victory.
Demons are permitted by God to tempt and deceive in a limited way. (1 Cor. 10:13; Job 1:19)
Demons are allowed limited control over natural phenomenon within the earth’s atmosphere (Job 1:19)
Satan has several primary characteristics, which are also his weapons against humanity and the church. He is the accuser, the deceiver, the opposer, and his first and most common ploy is division. Let’s not forget the main sin he brought to man, when he fell from heaven - pride, doubt, rebellion, in this order as well Ezekiel 28:8-19; Rev12:7-10).
The Bible records some of the characteristics of demonic oppression such as mental anguish, physical sickness, masochism, nakedness and the inability to hear or speak (Matt. 8:28-33; Mark 5:1-6; Luke 8:26-39; Matt. 9:32).
Satan has assigned certain fallen angels to certain territories, nations, cities, land and even churches. These demons seek to pervert the people in their territory and turn them against God. For example Ezekiel 28:12 contains reference to the king of Tyre. In the context of this scripture, God is not referring to an earthly king, but satan himself.
Jesus demonstrated His power over demons and has passed this power on to His followers (us) (Mark 16:17; Rev. 12-11).
Far more important than the study of angels and demons is the study of God Himself.
Consider this passage from the book of Revelation 19:4-6
And the twenty four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God who sat on the throne saying, Amen!! Alleluia!!"
Then a voice came from the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!" And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thundering, saying, "Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!"
This is the sound of heaven exulting over the destruction of the works of satan in the final judgment. I can’t wait! One thing is certain. To follow Jesus is to march toward a final and complete VICTORY.
The Unseen Realm.
In a time of war, battles are won by strategic concentration of force (prayer). Soldiers (us) don’t just attack along a scattered front. They follow a plan designed by a general (in our case, Almighty God) who just happens to have all the information, wisdom, and power we need. I can’t think of anything as great as the privilege of being enlisted into His army. God will lead us like He led the Israelites, with His pillar of fire, consuming the enemy. Hallelujah!!
General’s orders
We fortunately already have orders; we can also receive more of these orders, through prayer. Read the description of the battlefield. Here is a brief summary of some of the truths about the unseen realm revealed in the Word of God that pertain to the destruction of our cities, nations, church and people and how to stop it:
1. Satan’s kingdom is a limited hierarchy of fallen angels, evil spirits, with order, authority and a chain of command.
2. High ranking, supernatural personalities, referred to as principalities and powers in Ephesians 6, seek to dominate geographic areas, cities, houses and peoples etc.
3. While God’s Word tells believers to treat such beings with a healthy respect, it also commands us to take captivity captive, to bind the strong man, to plunder his goods and to tear down the rule, legal right and authority of the evil one.
4. We, as believers, are given authority to overcome the enemy as a result of Jesus' victory.
5. We must strategically apply God’s power-based discernment of the unseen realm.
6. We need to overcome the enemy to prepare the way for God’s power to move (This can be achieved, in foundational warfare.)
7. Jesus said "… Every city or house divided against itself will not stand." (Matt 12:25) Spiritual authority is present in the unity among believers, moving together toward a common goal.
Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven ….. Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven (Matt.18:18-19).
Consider the following facts about God’s holy angels. As you read and meditate on the implications, let these truths sink in.
1. There are millions of angels (Rev.5:11)
2. They are immortal spirit beings created by God to represent and guard His interests (Ps:148:5)
3. Angels are able to manifest themselves in human form, as occurred in the story of Lot and Sodom (Gen19;Acts 10:30).
4. Different categories of angels represent different functions and levels of authority, similar to an army. Seraphim, Cherubim, archangels, and guardian angels are some of the roles(Col 1:16; Jude 9).
5. Angels worship before the throne of God and serve Him obediently (Ps 148:2; Heb 1:6)
6. Guardian angels are assigned to each child at birth and minister to that person throughout life (except if the person hardens their heart against God and determines to do evil) (Matt.18:10)
7. Angels celebrate before the Throne of God every time a sinner comes to God in repentance (Luke 15:10)
8. Angels are commissioned to execute divine judgment upon persons, cities, and nations (Rev.)
9. The bible warns people not to worship angels (Col.2:18; Rev 19:10)
10. The work of angels is distinct from that of the Holy Spirit. Angels administer affairs on behalf of God, and the Holy Spirit reveals the mind of God. (Matt.4:11)
11. Some angels are assigned to specific territories, including people. The bible states that Israel and its people are under angelic guardianship. Daniel 12:1, Michael is represented as the prince of Israel. The prophet Ezekiel records hearing God speak to angels with these words; " Let those who have charge over this city draw near" (Ezek. 9:1)
Since Israel is the forerunner used to demonstrate God’s truth to all the earth, it follows that all nations, cities and areas have guardian angels assigned to them.
Five fold approach to bring down strongholds:
1. Worship
2. Waiting on God for instruction
3. Intercession – repentance
4. Speaking and overcoming evil with God’s word and blessing
5. Inviting the Holy Spirit to fill this place, nation, area, house, person.
Worship and praise
Worship is prayer and prayer is worship. Worship Him with a purity of heart and clean hands. Lift your heart to Him and glorify His Name. Sing to Him in a new song, (sing in the spirit,'Tephillah'), rejoice, and worship in freedom without a concern of others around you. Your only audience is God. The whole process above 1-5 can literally be done through worship alone. This shows you the power of worship and waiting upon the Lord.
"Even them I will bring to my Holy Mountain, and make them joyful in My House of prayer …… for My House shall be called a house of prayer for all nations."(Isaiah 56:7)
I believer this scripture actually speaks of an intercessory song. This scripture is a key to us. The words of prayer in Isaiah actually mean 'Tephillah', which in itself means a prayer set to music and sung in formal worship. The word 'Tephillah' occurs 77 times in the Old Testament. You could safely interpret the verse this way. 'My house shall be called a house of prayer and praise.' Music cannot be separated from prayer in most of the Old Testament. Many intercessors go around with long faces. If we as intercessors don’t maintain joy in intercession, the enemy will take our strength from us. Neh.8:10 says: "For the joy of the Lord is your strength." Satan loves to break down intercessors through grief and sorrow over all the problems they pray about. If they allow this and do not allow themselves to be released from their burdens, filled with God’s Spirit, and refreshed with His joy and strength, they will become wounded burden bearers.
Since prayer and praise are linked together in the Word of God, they lead us into the courts of God, into the Holy of Holies. Here is a scripture, relating worship and prayer, leading into warfare.
Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the congregation of the saints …. Let them praise His name with the dance; let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp…Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand, to execute vengeance on the nations, and punishments on the peoples; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute on them the written judgment – this honour have all His saints. Praise the Lord! Psalm 149:1,3,6-9.
In the above passage, praising God executes vengeance upon the heathen. It binds kings with chains, and nobles with fetters of iron, and executes judgment. Pretty powerful intercession! In other words, worship is spiritual warfare.
Wait on the Lord
Do not presume to attempt to extend God’s kingdom without His specific direction, Look to God in humility and patience. The best place to become familiar with God’s voice is through prayer. God delights to speak clearly to those who seek Him.
Remember, never put God in a box, He has a pattern, but often works through this pattern in many unique and different ways.
Our God is an awesome God.
